Update: Blu Hydrangea sashayed away on episode 6 of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Season 1. The maxi challenge of the week was to create a video ad for own brand water. Blu ended in the bottom and had to lip sync against Cheryl Hole and was eliminated.
In an interview with BBC, Blu describes herself as ‘not just a look queen’ but ‘someone who can dance, perform and can do some funny movements to make people laugh’ – whatever she means by those movements :-).
She thinks her strongest suit as a drag queen is her make-up skills and her working as a makeup artist in her day job will particularly help her shine in the competition. She also believes that her expertise in makeup gives her the ability to know what the judges (most of all Ru and Michelle) are looking for. Actually, she might be right…Just thinking how important the runway look and makeup are for winning or losing a challenge.
This is part of what she said in the interview with BBC when she was asked about the origin of her drag name: ‘My drag name comes from some Blu Hydrangea bush that is in my garden… we had to plant it with a rusty nail so that it turns into a beautiful blue hydrangea. I love that story of something coming from a rusty dirty old nail into something beautiful which is kind of like me as a person.’
Blu Hydrangea has been active as drag queen in Belfast, where she lives. ‘We literally have two gay bars opposite each other and you’re either on one side or the other and that’s it…It’s hard sometimes you’re performing to an empty bar with seven people and it’s very quiet’. I personally had no idea that Belfast’s gay scene is so small with the drag scene even much smaller. For many people, it would kill the motivation to be active in such a small scene, which makes it ever so amazing that someone like Blu made it to RuPaul’s Drag Race. She definitely made Northern Ireland proud!
